Star Mazda –Andries looking for a strong finish at Mazda Raceway

Salinas, Calif., September 15 – By all accounts, Nick Andries (Team Pelfrey / Lithionics Battery / GS610 Brake Fluid / Trademark Garage Floors / LindRoss Remodeling) has had himself a successful first full season in the Star Mazda Championship Presented by Goodyear. With a pole and two fastest race laps to go with seven podium finishes in 10 races this season, the only thing missing from Andries’ highlight reel is a victory. His last opportunity to take the top step on the podium this season is this weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Salinas, Calif.

“We’ve had a good competitive season, but the eighth place finish took me out of championship contention”, noted Andries before heading out a track walk; his first opportunity to get a close up look at Mazda Raceway. “It’s disappointing, but at the same time only four points separate me from Sage and J.V., so we still have something to settle this weekend.”

Other goal for Andries is to help Team Pelfrey win the Star Mazda Team Championship. Going into the finale at Mazda Raceway Team Pelfrey holds a slim two-point lead over Juncos Racing.

“As a new team, for Team Pelfrey to win the team championship would be a great accomplishment. Connor and I would both like to win this title for team and for Dale Pelfrey. To be as successful as we’ve been this year is a tribute to what Dale put together and a season of hard work by the entire team.”

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
Carved out of an old artillery target range that was once part of what used to be the nearby Fort Ord, the track formerly known as Laguna Seca Raceway has become one of the premiere road courses in North America. Home to the MotoGP RedBull U.S. Grand Prix, Mazda Raceway has hosted everything from Can-Am and Trans-Am to IndyCar, Grand-Am and the American Le Mans Series, and is the home of the annual Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

This weekend will be Andries first visit to Mazda Raceway, a track he (and anyone who has operated a racing sim) is nonetheless familiar with.

“I’ve put in a lot of hours on iRacing learning this track and it is really good at showing you which way the track goes, the camber of the corners and things like that. What it doesn’t give justice to is just how much the elevation changes on this track.”

“Set ups also don’t translate between online and real life, but our team has some good data on this track and my teammate has raced here on several occasions so we will be prepared.”

The weekend kicks off with Practice on Friday, September 16th at 8:00 a.m. Pacific. Follow the action through Star Mazda’s live timing and scoring at www.livetiming.net/starmazda with commentary available at www.twitter.com/altemus_prime.
